Working Offline

Sessions happen in pubs, back rooms, and kitchens — places where the signal often isn't great. ceol.io is built to keep working when your connection drops, so you can look things up and make changes without waiting for bars to reappear.

The one requirement: open the app online at least once (on the device and browser you'll use). That lets it save a copy of your tunes and the pages you need. After that, it works whether you're online or not.

What works offline

  • Your tune list — browse, filter, and sort My Tunes.
  • Tune details — open any tune to see its notation (the "dots"). Offline you get the opening bars (the incipit); the full notation needs a connection.
  • Search — the "Find a tune" search in the menu finds tunes you know, plus popular tunes you might want to add.
  • Your sessions — the sessions list and the pages for sessions you've visited.
  • Making changes — add a tune to your list, change a tune's status (Want To Learn / Learning / Learned), or bump its heard count.

A few things still need a connection: signing in or out, admin pages, importing from TheSession.org, and full tune notation. If you land on a page that isn't saved yet, you'll see a simple "You're offline" screen with a way back.

The connection dot

A small dot in the top bar tells you where things stand:

  • Orange — you're offline. Anything you change is saved on your device and waiting to sync.
  • Pulsing — you're back online and your changes are syncing.
  • Green, then gone — everything's synced and up to date.

Tap the dot to see how long you've been offline and how many changes are waiting to sync.

Changes you make offline

When you change something offline, it takes effect right away on screen — a tune you add shows up in your list marked pending. Your changes are saved on your device and sent automatically the next time you're online; you don't have to do anything. Add a tune while offline and you'll be taken to your tune list with a note that it'll sync when you're back on.

It's safe to make the same change more than once or to close the app before it syncs — nothing gets doubled up or lost.

Tips

  • Open the app and visit My Tunes and your session pages before you head somewhere with no signal, so they're saved and ready.
  • If a page looks out of date, reconnect and reload — online always shows the latest.
  • The live session logger has its own offline handling; see The Live Logger for details.
